Varna

Bharathaa Arts was started in 1995 as Bishan Community Club’s Indian Dance Group. Bharathaa Arts was founded by our honourable teachers, The Kesavan teachers, Smt. Suganthi Kumaraguru and Smt. Jeyanthi Balasubramaniam.

Bharathaa Arts has taken part in various events such as Chingay Processions, National Day Parade, functions organised by CCs and RCs, temple shows and overseas performances as well.

After two successful mega shows, “Devine Love”, a dance drama held in 2003 and “Rhythmic Renditions”, a dance production held in 2004, Bharathaa Arts proudly presents its next proud recital achievement, “Varna”.

“Varna” is a classical Indian dance show with elements of contemporary fusion, folk and traditional dance.
Together with the Kesavan sisters, Bharathaa Arts is privileged to have with us an amazing choreographer and dancer from India, Miss Maanu. Mannu was the leading actress (Thilothama) in the south Indian film Kadhal Manan directed by Saran in 1998 and also acted in the very famous Malayalam drama serial Devi Mahathamayam. She would be training us for these five weeks for our big show. “Varna” would be staged with a total of almost 30 Bharathaa Arts dancers.

Lavanya Kulasingam from SIMICC would be part of this production as well. She has been a student of Bharathaa Arts for seven years. She would love her dear friends of SIMICC to give their support to her and her dance school.

"As a budding dance school, your presence and encouragement would make a vast difference to us. Do support the Arts..."

The Art of Rangoli

A workshop conducted in conjunction with the exhibition Past-Present: Craft Communities in Contemporary India

One of our members Niran had recently attended a Rangoli workshop that was held at NUS Museum.

It was conducted by Mrs Vijaya Mohan who started learning Rangoli in Trichy, Tamil Nadu, India, at the age of five. She then moved to Sinagpore in 1993 and ever since has done thousands of Rangoli workshops here.

Niran had a fun time learning how to draw intricate designs using dry, coarsely ground rice flour placed between the thumb and the forefinger and moved along a geometric design on the ground.

Below are photos of Niran's Rangoli !
